Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis electrodes are one of the most versatile electrode applications. Traditionally Iontophoresis has been used in wellbeing and beauty applications. Iontophoresis uses electrical current to help the skin absorb lotions and nutrients found on a patch. It also stimulates the pores in the skin, helping them open and making the skin more receptive to lotions.
In recent years, a lot of research and tests are being done to explore other uses for Iontophoresis. Some of this research is looking into the possibility of diagnostics, through measuring the efficiency of the Iontophoresis process. Another application is based on reversing the process, which takes molecules away from the skin, rather than bringing them into the skin. This may be helpful for patients with diabetes, allowing glucose measurements without having to break the skin.
